I also wrote the hour-long feature ‘Krismis in Reiger Park’ for Kyk-Net. I was presenter and co-producer. This work dealt with the devastating effects of the Group Areas Act and how communities had to fight to regain and maintain their dignity.
2003 saw the realization of my second drama-comedy ‘Oz pel Gatiepie gaan visvang’. This was performed at the State Theatre, The Wits amphitheatre, the Gariep Arts Festival, The Kalahari Festival, The Sterrewag and at various other venues.
In 2004, during the elections in SA, the third Gatiepie series saw the light of day in the Karoo. It was entitled ‘Erections 2004- vote for Gatiepie’. It was liberating to engage in this satire and tour.
In 2005 I adapted this work for a new Arts festival, the Chainoqua Arts Festival, in Worcester and entitled it ‘Gatiepie word President’.
Then I wrote the Gatiepie series ‘Gatiepie sien “vrou spoke’’. It had its debut at the State Theatre in November 2005 from whence it went to the Karoo, where it played to packed houses in 2006. K. A. T. also took the play to Namibia. It was a great honour to appear at the National Theatre in Namibia.
In 2007 we played at the ArtsCape Theatre with the reworked ‘Gatiepie sien ‘vrou spoke’’. The Pioneer School for the blind attended one of our performances and it was a truly the most inspirational and emotional moment in my career in theatre. Later that year K.A.T. performed two shows in Worcester to raise funds for them. I am presently writing a drama for them entitled ‘Steek aan die Kers’.
My new production is ‘Gatiepie kry ‘n baby’ with the talented Charmaine Hess making her debut in this work. It was launched at Carnival City Casino and we have performed this play at the Arena Theatre at the Arts Cape Theatre Centre in Cape Town during April 2010. |
